This – at the time unknown approach – enabled the creation of an international network of artists and has provided the ground for the development of site-specific sculptures, painting and installations. Many artists of that period such as Richard Long, Bruce Nauman, Sol LeWitt, On Kawara, Lawrence Weiner, Hanne Darboven, Robert Ryman, for example, had their first solo exhibitions in Europe at “Ausstellungen bei Konrad Fischer“, and have continued to exhibit at the gallery regularly up to the present day.įischer’s prime objective was to invite the artists to Düsseldorf rather than to just have their works presented there. When Konrad Fischer opened a tiny exhibition space in a disused alley in the centre of Düsseldorf with a first exhibition by Carl Andre in October 1967, Minimal or Conceptual Art were hardly known in Europe.
